In a campaign video and glitch-riddled Twitter event with Elon Musk, the owner of Twitter, Ron DeSantis announced his candidacy for the Republican nomination for president.
Earlier on Wednesday, before his event with Musk and an interview with Fox News, DeSantis filed paperwork with the Federal Election Commission.
The governor of Florida has pursued divisive, culture war-focused policies, such as banning abortions after six weeks and targeting LGBTQ+ and racial issues in the classroom.
It had been a long time coming. Last November, DeSantis won reelection in a landslide, published a memoir in February, and was widely reported to be staffing up while visiting states that will vote early in the primary next year.
