In response to a potential Chinese invasion, Taiwan plans to buy 400 Harpoon missiles for land-based use. The deal was approved by Congress in 2020.
Harpoons made by Boeing Co. have previously been purchased by Taiwan. According to Rupert Hammond-Chambers, president of the US-Taiwan Business Council, a contract with Boeing was issued on Taiwan's behalf by the US Naval Air Systems Command.
Taiwan was not mentioned as the purchaser in the Pentagon's announcement of the $1.7 billion contract with Boeing on April 7. There is high tension between the United States and China, especially over Taiwan, which China claims as part of its territory. After meeting with US House Speaker Kevin McCarthy in California this month, China held military drills around Taiwan.
